The post office is being kicked off Ada Meikrantz' front porch.
And it could take two years to find and approve a new post office for the tiny Traverse County community, said Carol Putnam, the U.S. Postal Service's discontinuance coordinator in Washington, D.C."You can't do it overnight," Putnam said.
Postmaster Naomi Hayward, who is being transferred to Cedar, said she'll miss distributing mail to Karlin's 100 residents.
"It's like my family," she said. "We know when somebody's sick and when they need help."
The Karlin post office, which has 80 mail boxes, lost its lease when Meikrantz sold her home.
Hayward learned of the decision to close last week.
She received a letter Thursday from Brandon Burton, acting director of field operations for the Postal Service's Grand Rapids division.
