Mary E. Briggs, a teacher at Jordan Ridge Elementary in South Jordan, has been nominated for the 1989 National PTA Phoebe Apperson Hearst Outstanding Educator Award.

She earned a bachelor's degree in history and a master's degree in learning from the University of Utah and has been a presenter at various gifted workshops and an instructor for gifted math activities.Briggs teaches a split class of second- and third-graders. In nominating her, PTA President Cheryl Porter lauded Briggs for her genuine caring. Briggs frequently calls her students to praise them for good performance and to let their parents know of progress.

"As the children leave (for the day), she gives a hug to each of them. It takes a few extra minutes, but it does wonders for all of them," Porter said.
