Eight high school students from throughout Utah were honored May 10 for their outstanding abilities at the first Dairy Farmers of Utah Cream of the Crop awards presentation in the Arizona Room of Little America Hotel.

Those honored and their high schools were Marc B. Hagen, Brighton; Randy Reid, Spanish Fork; Jim Ray, San Juan; Vernon Hatch, Rich; Jodiann Ferre, Ogden; Rebecca Johnson, North Sevier; Deanne Thurman, South Sevier; and Michele Spangenthal, Clearfield. The eight seniors have achieved excellence in both academics and sports or other activities, according to Utah Dairy Commission Administrator Clint Warby.

Guest speaker at the awards luncheon was the University of Utah's new head basketball coach, Rick Majerus.

Warby said the dairy commission worked with the Utah High School Activities Association to identify the eight youths.

"These four men and four women are symbolic of the message Utah's dairy farmers are trying to communicate," Warby said. "They represent the healthy lifestyles and eating habits that have contributed to their success as young scholars and athletes. We believe milk is part of that success."
