Y. DECATHLETES OFF TO FAST START IN WAC MEET

Dave Draney and football player Scott Peterson were first and second heading into today's final day of decathlon competition in the Western Athletic Conference track and field championships.

Draney, a junior from Star Valley, Wyo., scored 3,879 points Wednesday, winning the high jump (with a leap of 7 feet), and the 100- (10.9) and 400-meter (51.0) dashes.Peterson, a two-year starting free safety for BYU's football team, scored 3,551 points Wednesday, a personal record for first-day scores.

Still another BYU athlete, freshman Lance Heppler, was fourth with 3,317 points.

"This puts us in very good position to enter the second day," said BYU coach Willard Hirschi.
