Two people remained hospitalized in Salt Lake City Friday after a Wednesday morning car crash near Panguitch that killed a Mesa, Ariz., woman.
Sonia Surface, 52, died when the car driven by her husband, Henry Surface, 72, left U-143 and crashed into two trees, bursting into flames. The Utah Highway Patrol said the mishap occurred between Panguitch Lake and Cedar Breaks National Monument. The victim was dead on arrival at Garfield Memorial Hospital, Panguitch. Her husband and another passenger, Diane Verity, 31, also of Mesa, were flown by helicopter to LDS Hospital. Hospital officials listed Verity as critical and Henry Surface as serious.
A Highway Patrol spokesman said the driver of the Volkswagen four-door sedan apparently fell asleep at the wheel and the car drifted off the highway about 9:30 a.m. The two survivors escaped the burning car by themselves but the victim had to be pulled from the vehicle by passersby, the spokesman said.
