Defending national champion Highland High School is seeded first in Saturday's United States High School Rugby Championship at Cottonwood High School.
The first match starts at 9 a.m., with finals slated for 5 p.m. Highland will play at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. and also later, if it wins.The United States of America Rugby Football Union has sponsored a national championship since 1985. In addition to last year, Highland also won in 1986 and was runner-up in 1985 and 1986.
Other teams participating are Druids, St. Louis; Overland, Denver; Whitemarsh, Philadelphia; Burlingame, Burlingame, Calif.; West End, Fairfax, Va.; Xavier, N.Y.; and Liberty, Issaquah, Wash.
Highland enters the tournament with a 10-1 record. The Highland team was established in 1976 with Larry Gelwix serving as coach all 13 years. During that time the Rams have compiled a 153-30-5 record.
There is no admission charge.
