A June 7 preliminary hearing has been set for Robert Eugene Bennett, 51, who has been charged with killing a man whose severed legs were found in a trash bin in February.
Bennett was arraigned Thursday before 3rd Circuit Judge Philip K. Palmer on second-degree murder charges that carry a 5-year-to-life prison sentence and a $10,000 fine. The judge set bail at $500,000 and appointed a public defender, Andy Valdez, to represent Bennett.
Judge Michael L. Hutchings is scheduled to preside over the 9:30 a.m. hearing June 7.
Bennett was arrested in Las Vegas on a separate charge. He was charged with the killing May 10 after authorities found White's head and torso buried in the back yard of a Salt Lake home Bennett once rented.
Bennett is thought to be the last person to see White alive. The two men used to play chess together and were to start work at a Salt Lake telemarketing company the week White disappeared.
