US WEST Communications is asking the U.S. District Court to waive a federal regulation preventing the company from providing address information as part of its Directory Assistance service.
To ensure compliance with current federal regulations, US WEST stopped providing address assistance on Jan. 1.US WEST is seeking a favorable ruling similar to that received recently by Ameritech, another of the holding companies formed following the breakup of the Bell system five years ago.
The court oversees the modified final judgment that governs the deregulation order.
US WEST is also asking the court to expedite its ruling, a move that could result in a decision in as little as two months. Those interested in commenting on the request should direct those comments to the antitrust division of the U.S. Department of Justice.
Carol A. Dunlap, company spokeswoman, said the company has had a number of requests from blind and physically disabled people asking that the company seek a waiver.
