RECORD-SETTING EFFORTS HIGHLIGHT PREP TRACK MEET

Timpview's Dave Spence showed he's one of the best high school distance runners to ever come out of Utah and Provo's Kristie Brown shattered her second individual record (3,200 meter run) and had a hand in another (medley relay) to highlight Saturday's 3A-4A state track and field championships at Brigham Young University.

Spence, who won the 3,200 in record time Friday and added victories in the 800 and 1,600 as well as anchoring a record-setting medley relay team Saturday, led Timpview to the 3A boys title while Brown's efforts weren't quite enough in the girls competition as Judge Memorial, paced by the Dilley sisters, Jana and Tricia, won the 3A girls crown.Davis darted around the track fast enough and often enough to take the 4A boys crown while another distance-running standout, freshman Lynette Petersen, won three events to lead Bingham to the 4A girls title.

Carolyn Knight of Woods Cross ended her high school career with a state record in the 4A girls 400.

There were a number of other exceptional performances - such as Colby Gray's 6-foot-10-inch high jump, Matt Stowell's swift 400-meter run and Bart Jorgenson's efforts in the 100-and 200-meter dashes - which are detailed on D4.
