Four athletes and four coaches were honored at the recent 4A and 3A state prep track meets.
Awarded top honors were:- 4A outstanding female athlete: Bingham freshman distance runner Lynette Petersen, who won the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter races.
- 4A outstanding male athlete: American Fork sprinter Bart Jorgenson, who won the 100- and 200-meter dashes and who had set a 4A record in the 100 earlier in the season.
- 3A outstanding female athlete: Provo distance runner Kristie Brown, who won the 1,600 and 3,200 and helped Provo to a title in the medley relay - all three in 3A-record time.
- 3A outstanding male athlete: Timpview distance runner Dave Spence, who won the 800, 1,600, and 3,200 and who anchored the T-birds' winning (and record-setting) medlay-relay team. Spence set a 3A mark in the 3,200 at the weekend meet, finishing his prep career with 3A bests in all four events.
- Coaches of the Year: 4A boys' coach, Lynn Dubois of Viewmont; 4A girls' coach, Ed Murrell of Cottonwood; 3A boys' coach, Brian Kuhlmann of Timpview; and 3A girls' coach, Wayne Sorensen of Timpview.
