Rescue workers carry Brigham Young University student Kathryn Allison to safety after she fell about 30 feet while hiking alone in Rock Canyon on Monday. "The position where she came to rest was pretty precarious," Police Chief Swen Nielsen said. "If she would have rolled farther, she would have gone over a cliff and had a fatal fall." Allison, 18, Mesa, Ariz., was taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center with minor injuries to her legs, ribs, knees and back. "This simply reiterates the ever-present concern we have about people climbing in the canyon," Nielsen said. An average of two people a year die while hiking in Utah County mountains. Most of the victims are young adults, police and search and rescue officials say. The accidents occur because most people don't realize the dangers of climbing and the need for training.
