HUNGARIAN LEADER REVEALS CHANGE IN PARTY THINKING

The leaders of the 1956 Hungarian uprising, which was crushed by Soviet tanks, were "victims of show trial" and their executions were a political mistake, Foreign Minister Gyula Horn said in an abrupt turnaround in party thinking.

The shift in thinking of the Hungarian Communist Party, which until now has branded former Prime Minister Imre Nagy as a misguided ideologue manipulated by foreign powers, makes it almost certain he will be legally rehabilitated in conjunction with the reburial of his remains June 16."On the basis of documents explored, it can be ascertained that Imre Nagy and his associates were the victims of show trials of political motives," Horn said Monday during a talk at a tobacco factory in Eger, according to the official news agency MTI.
