A former Salt Lake County jailer has been charged with possessing cocaine in the jail.
Edward R. Colbert, 23, is named in a complaint accusing him of possessing a controlled substance in a correctional facility, a second-degree felony. The charge alleges that Colbert was found with nearly one-fourth ounce of cocaine on his person in the jail.
Possession of cocaine is normally a third-degree felony. When it occurs within a correctional facility, it is charged more seriously.
Colbert was arrested Saturday and booked into the Davis County Jail where he is being held pending arraignment in 3rd Circuit Court.
Sheriff Pete Hayward said Colbert, who worked as a jailer for about two years, was terminated from his job Thursday morning.
