LDS CHURCH NAMES DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Friday named Bruce L. Olsen managing director of the church's Public Communications/Special Affairs Department.

Olsen, 50, is currently director of corporate communications for Geneva Steel. He succeeds Elder Richard P. Lindsay, who was called to serve in the church's Second Quorum of the Seventy in April.In his new position, Olsen will oversee the community and media relations efforts of the 6.7 million-member church.

Olsen, a native of Orangeville, Emery County, graduated from the College of Eastern Utah and obtained his bachelors and master's degrees from Brigham Young University. During a 20-year career at BYU, Olsen held several positions, including assistant dean and registrar, associate professor of communications and assistant to the president of university relations.

His church assignments include serving as president of the Massachusetts Boston Mission, 1982-85. He is currently president of the Orem Utah Sunset Heights Stake. He is married to the former Christine Payne. The couple has four children.
