HOUSE APPROVES `DIRE EMERGENCY' APPROPRIATION BILL

With the Senate in recess this week, the only roll call votes were in the House, and the only substantive votes came on Wednesday.

The House voted 217-203 to take up a so-called "dire emergency" supplemental appropriation bill.Rep. Jim Hansen, R-Utah, voted no, as did Rep. Howard Nielson, R-Utah. Rep. Wayne Owens, D-Utah, voted yes.

The House rejected, 213-205 a bill to take money away from the Strategic Defense Initiative and put it into additional anti-drug efforts. Hansen and Nielson voted no, Owens, yes.

The House also passed, 409-0 a $340 million supplemental appropriation for the Veterans Administration. All three Utahns voted yes.
