Authorities are seeking an inmate convicted of attempting to kill two Salt Lake County deputy sheriffs. He walked away Friday from a halfway house.

Loren Joseph McGeehan, 28, Salt Lake, pleaded guilty to shooting deputy G. Stephen Foster and reserve deputy Brent Cottle during a gun battle Feb. 11, 1979.Corrections Department spokesman Dave Franchina said McGeehan entered Utah State Prison on July 20, 1979, on a five-year-to-life sentence. He was released to the Orange Street Correctional Facility in Salt Lake in September.

McGeehan was scheduled for parole Aug. 8, Franchina said.

The man, described as having dark hair, a short, well-trimmed beard and scars all over his body, is considered armed and dangerous, according to a police broadcast.
