Orem police say a man charged last week with attempted theft bit an officer on Monday, then announced he has AIDS.
However, the prisoner was tested for the virus, and Orem police spokesman Gerald Nielsen said Tuesday that the tests came back negative."The officer will still have to be tested every six months for awhile just to make sure," Nielsen said. "Still, there is a lot of relief around the department."
Nielsen said if the officer, who was not identified, had been infected with the deadly disease, the prisoner would have been charged with attempted murder.
Terry Alex Williams, 25, Nashville, Tenn., is charged with the theft of $366 from Portrait Station, a store in University Mall. Williams was being escorted from 4th Circuit Court back to jail when he reportedly began to struggle and bit the officer, drawing blood.
Williams was scheduled for a Wednesday pretrial hearing on the original charge.
