Utah State University's Institute of Political Economy is on the Templeton Foundation's Honor Roll for Colleges and Universities.

The institute, under the direction of Randy Simmons, was one of three winners nationwide in the institutional category. The Honor Roll Awards recognize colleges, college departments and individual professors for contributing to the understanding of free enterprise economic systems and the philosophy of individual rights and responsibilities.

The awards are administered by the Reason Foundation, which said, "The institute provides encouragement and counsel to students on the importance of being even-handed - especially important at a public university."

The basic purpose of USU's Institute of Political Economy is to study the foundations of a free society, said Simmons.

The institute coordinates student internships with lawmakers and also has pioneered non-governmental internships.

USU students have interned with the such organizations as the National Taxpayers Union, American Legislative Exchange Council, the Competitive Enterprise Institute and the CATO Institute, all in Washington, D.C.
