A TWA flight bound from Los Angeles to Honolulu with more than 200 people on board was diverted to Hilo on Hawaii Island because it was low on fuel from an apparent leak, authorities said Monday.
The Coast Guard said the pilot estimated he had only 15 minutes of fuel left when he landed.TWA Flight 235 reported shortly before 11:30 p.m. Sunday that it was headed to Hilo because of the fuel loss, the Coast Guard said.
The Federal Aviation Administration asked the Coast Guard to escort the Lockheed L-1011, which carried 187 passengers and 18 crew members.
The Coast Guard sent a C-130 plane and a helicopter and two Hawaii Air National Guard F-15s. As a precaution, the Coast Guard also sent two cutters to the scene and contacted two Navy vessels.
