The body of a woman who had been stabbed in the back several times was found submerged in an irrigation ditch north of the Salt Lake International Airport Tuesday morning near 2180 N. 22nd West.
Two women who live in the area were out exercising when they discovered the body and called the police at about 8 a.m., said Lt. Bill Shelton. The woman's age and identity were still unknown later in the morning, and officers were treating the incident as a homicide, Shelton said.
Officers cordoned off roads as far as a half-mile away from where the body was found. "Until we know how big the crime scene is, it's easier to set a large perimeter and narrow it down," Shelton said. Officers scoured the immediate area and photographed the scene before removing the body from the canal about 9:30 a.m.
