VAN AND UNCONSCIOUS MAN MAY HOLD CLUES TO HOMICIDE

A man found shot and stabbed about 300 feet from where another man was slain remained unconscious in a Salt Lake hospital Tuesday, hindering efforts to piece together the events leading to the shootings.

Meanwhile, the Salt Lake County sheriff's office has recovered a van that may offer clues to the homicide.Wasatch County Sheriff Edd Thacker met Tuesday with Midvale police to discuss possible connections between a weekend kidnapping in Midvale and the shooting death of Anthony J. Chavez, 44, whose body was found on alternate U.S. 189 about three miles east of Hailstone Junction near Heber.

Chavez, hands bound behind his back, was found by target shooters about 300 feet from where a Utah Highway patrolman six hours earlier had found Lino Collato, age unknown. A possible witness to Chavez's death, Collato, of Guadalajara, Mexico, was taken to University Hospital, where he was in critical condition Tuesday suffering stab and gunshot wounds.
