W. CAROLINA GRID COACH LOSES BATTLE WITH DISEASE

Former Western Carolina football coach Bob Waters has lost his six-year battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease, becoming the third San Francisco 49er from the early 1960s to die from the incurable illness.

Waters died in his sleep at his home Monday. He was 50. He was diagnosed with the disease in 1984, and eventually lost the use of his arms and legs and was confined to a wheelchair.Waters, who had coached the Catamounts for 20 years, was reassigned to the position of associate athletic director and head football coach emeritus on April 14.
