DIXIE LOSES TO TOP-RANKED TEAM AT JUNIOR COLLEGE WORLD SERIES

Chuck Foster's 2-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning drove in the winning runs as top-ranked San Jacinto, Texas, held off rallying Dixie 11-10 in winners bracket play Monday at the National Junior College World Series.

In another winners bracket game, Northeast Oklahoma A&M defeated Iowa Western 12-2. In an earlier game, Cochise, Ariz., edged Brookdale, N.J. 9-7 in losers bracket play.Foster's big single, following Roger Luce's RBI single in the eighth, gave the Gators an 11-7 lead going into the ninth.

The Rebels came charging back with three runs on Kelly Peterson's RBI single and Mark Roberts 2-run double, but the rally fizzled as Reed Secrist tried to score the tying run from first base and was thrown out at home to end the game.

The Rebels were trailing 7-0 in the top of the fifth when Roberts belted a grand slam home run to put the Utah school back in the game, 7-4.

San Jacinto showed its batting strength in the third inning, already leading 3-0, when Dan Robinson led off with a home run and then Tim Fiene closed out the inning with a 3-run homer to put the Gators up 7-0.

San Jacinto starter Scott McCarty, 14-2, took the win while Dixie's Paul Allen, 10-3, went the distance and took the loss.
