While the rest of the state celebrated Memorial Day with the usual picnics and parades, this northern Utah community dedicated a city park in honor of its only resident to have received the Congressional Medal of Honor.
The city renamed North Park as George Wahlen North Park.George Wahlen, who received the nation's highest honor during the World War II battle of Iwo Jima, accepted the city recognition Monday with gratitude, saying his wartime experiences taught him the value of preparedness and freedom.
Wahlen was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1945 for his conduct as a medic. Despite being wounded twice, he refused to be evacuated during the battle and continued to help his fallen comrades until a third wound made him unable to walk.
After the battle, he was hospitalized for eight months.
