Ann Nielsen Erickson was named academic vice president of Salt Lake Community College Wednesday. She succeeds Max Lowe, who has been associated with the office of the Utah Commissioner of Education for several months.

Erickson has been with the community college for 21 years, serving first as a mathematics teacher. She was named associate dean of the technical operations division in 1979 and in 1980 was advanced to dean of the school of technology and general education.Her appointment to the vice president's position was affirmed by the SLCC Institutional Council.

"This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the economic development of Utah," she said. "We're just beginning to scratch the surface here in Utah."

She earned a bachelor's degree at Brigham Young University and taught in Murray School District for nine years. From 1950 to 1968, she was secretary to several local companies, then returned to education with the community college. She was a member of the Governor's Task Force on Integrating Women into the Workforce in the early 1980s.
