"Jerome Robbins' Broadway" was named outstanding musical of the 1988-89 theater season by the Drama Desk, an association of New York City critics, editors and reporters.
The Drama Desk on Monday also honored Wendy Wasserstein's "Heidi Chronicles" as best new play and "Our Town" as best revival. Bill Irwin's "Largely New York" was honored as a "unique theatrical experience."The award for best actor in a musical went to Jason Alexander in "Jerome Robbins' Broadway."
Toni DiBuono of "Forbidden Broadway" was chosen as best actress in a musical.
The award for best actress in a play went to Pauline Collins for her work in "Shirley Valentine." Best featured actor was Peter Frechette in "Eastern Standard."
Four awards went to Ken Ludwig's "Lend Me a Tenor." Philip Bosco won for best actor in a play, Tovah Feldshuh won for best featured actress, Jerry Zaks won for direction, and William Ivey Long won for costume design.
Santo Loquasto won the set-design award for his work on "Italian American Reconciliation" and "Cafe Crown."
Jennifer Tipton won an award for lighting design for her work on "Jerome Robbins' Broadway," "Long Day's Journey Into Night," and "Waiting for Godot."
