The George S. Eccles Fitness Center and the Eccles Computer Laboratory have been dedicated at Dixie College.
The center and lab were made possible through a grant to Dixie College by the George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation. The fitness center is one of four structures comprising the Dixie Center. The computer lab is located in the business building.
Two commemorative plaques noting the Eccles' contributions were unveiled at the dedication.
"Together, George and Lolie Eccles have given unselfishly to the development of Utah education," said Dixie President Douglas D. Alder. "Their generous contributions for the Eccles Fitness Center and the computer laboratory are ample evidence of their continued support and efforts to raise the quality of education at Dixie College."
The fitness center includes a weight room, natatorium and complete swim facilities and a dance studio.
"It is great to live in a country and in a society that produces people like the Eccles family, who have been successful in amassing great wealth, and just as successful in using it to bless the lives of others," observed Dixie's Institutional Council chairman, Truman Bowler. "Most of the thousands of people who will use these facilities in the years to come will never meet a member of the Eccles family, so on behalf of those who will benefit from their contribution in the years to come, we are using this dedication ceremony to offer our thanks."
The late George S. Eccles was described during the dedication as a banker, business leader, entrepreneur, avid student of economics, financial and political conditions and a civic and educational leader. Dolores ("Lolie") Eccles shares her husband's interest in support of civic, community and educational endeavors.
