A former federal security chief arrested in the 1984 slaying of a crusading journalist had feared the reporter would link him to Mexico's most notorious drug runners, news reports say.

Jose Antonio Zorrilla Perez, who was Mexico's equivalent of FBI director, was arrested Tuesday and called the mastermind of the murder of columnist Manuel Buendia.On Wednesday, opposition legislators demanded that former President Miguel de la Madrid and Interior Secretary Fernando Gutierrez Barrios testify before a parliamentary committee on their "possible knowledge" of details surrounding the killing.
