A Mexican man found shot and stabbed near a highway in Wasatch County last month was arraigned Friday in 3rd Circuit Court on charges he kidnapped a Salt Lake man and the man's son.

About 100 yards from Martinez was the body of Anthony J. Chavez, 44, Salt Lake City, who died of multiple gunshot wounds.

The Wasatch County sheriff's office is still trying to figure out who killed Chavez and almost killed Martinez, who was in critical condition at University Hospital for several weeks.

Martinez was released from the hospital Thursday night and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.

According to the charges and police reports, Martinez was one of two people who kidnapped a Salt Lake man and the man's son from their home near Ninth East and 13th South on May 25. The victims were taken to Daniels Canyon in Wasatch County, where they were tied to a tree, the abductors wanting to know where the man's girlfriend was.

The girlfriend was accused of stealing a large amount of cocaine from drug dealers.
