SHARE MISS WHEELCHAIR UTAH PAGEANT IS THIS EVENING

The 1989 Miss Wheelchair Utah Pageant, "Celebrating Achievement and Awareness," will begin at 6 p.m. June 17 at the Ogden Hotel, 247 24th Street, in the Union Pacific Ballroom.

The six women competing for the title are Betty Daz, Ogden; Betsy Metz, Salt Lake City; DaNiece Mikkelsen, Ogden; Dawn Olson, Ogden; Ruth Nielsen, Ogden; and Vickie Stumph, West Valley City.Judging during the three-day event emphasizes the contestants' achievements since the onset of disability as well as advocacy, conversational and self-expression abilities. The winner will be a role model and spokeswoman for all mobility-impaired citizens and will be asked to speak to groups ranging from school children to state legislators.

Kathy Garcia, a patient representative at the Sugar House InstaCare office and single mother of a daughter and several foster children, is retiring as Miss Wheelchair Utah.

Craig Bolerjack, KSL television sports anchor, will emcee the pageant and state lawmakers will serve as escorts. The public is invited. Tickets are available at the door or at the Stewart Rehabilitation Center in Ogden.
