A student at the University of Utah was crowned Miss Utah on Saturday night and will represent Utah at the Miss America Scholarship Pageant in Atlantic City Sept. 16.

Jacque Dawn Tingey, 25, Centerville, a daughter of Ronald and Karen Alvey and Larry C. Tingey, was Miss Intermountain Region, one of 60 contestants in the pageant at Mountain View High School, Orem.Tingey sang "Kiss Me in the Rain" for the talent competition, which counts for 40 percent of the total points awarded to contestants.

First runner-up is Miss Utah Valley, Sherie North, 23, Provo, a student at Brigham Young University and a daughter of James and Laural North. Second runner-up is Miss Murray, Alyce Stevens, 20, Salt Lake City, a student at BYU and a daughter of Michael H. and Ruth C. Stevens.

Third runner-up is Miss Lehi, Danaca Palmer, 22, Lehi, a student at Utah Valley Community College and a daughter of Don and DeAnn Palmer. Fourth runner-up is Miss Utah State University, Jeannie Chambers, 22, Payson, a USU student and a daughter of Leo and LuAine Chambers.

The Miss Utah Pageant gave away $90,000 worth of scholarships. New this year is national sponsorship by Fruit of the Loom Co., which gave the Quality of Life Award and a $500 scholarship to Miss Richfield, Jennifer Jepson, 18, Richfield, a BYU freshman this fall and a daughter of Robert and Jeane Jepson.

Sophia Symko, last year's Miss Utah, and KSL television's Kent Norton were hosts for the evening.
