Pope John Paul II Friday called on Roman Catholics and Protestants in Europe to fight the forces of materialism that he said threatened individualism and their freedoms.

On the second day of a five-nation tour of Scandinavia, a stronghold of Lutheranism, John Paul traveled north to this fjord city of 135,000 people where less than 1 percent of the residents are Catholics. At an ecumenical prayer service in a cathedral that was the center of Catholicism in pre-reformation Scandinavia, John Paul emphasized the common roots of Catholics and Lutherans.

"As Christians we proclaim a wisdom that recognizes and upholds the priority of ethics over technology, the primacy of the person over things, the superiority of spirit over matter," the Roman Catholic leader said.
