Workers at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park hose down the forward edge of a lava flow this week to save the Waha'ula visitor center, but their efforts were in vain. The lava hardened Wednesday night, but the molten rock inexorably engulfed the evacuated building Thursday. "The first lava hit it at 2:42 p.m. but did not ignite it because we were putting water on it furiously," said park ranger Jon Erickson. Ultimately the heat proved too much. At 3:50 p.m., flames were visible, and the complex was engulfed within 45 minutes.
