A West Valley man was killed Thursday afternoon when the motorcycle he was driving slid under a car that had pulled out in front of him.

James Hegelman, 20, was traveling west on Murray-Holladay Road (48th South) at about 1350 East when a car pulled out from a side street to turn east, said Cpl. Dennis Leavitt, Salt Lake County sheriff's office.Leavitt said Hegelman laid the motorcycle down to avoid the car, but he and the cycle both slid under the car. Hegelman, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered massive head, leg and arm injuries. He was pronounced dead about three hours later at University Hospital.

The driver of the car, Lois Craig, 70, Holladay, was not injured in the accident. "She never saw him coming," Leavitt said.
