A 6-year-old boy answered the screams of his drowning mother by grabbing a pole and pulling the woman to safety as she struggled to stay afloat in the family's pool, police said.

Irene Montano, 27, was cleaning the swimming pool in the back yard of her family's home at 646 S. Avington Ave. shortly before 6 p.m. when she slipped and fell into the pool's deep end, Officer Gary Chiles said."She couldn't swim and screamed for her son to help her," Chiles said.

The boy, Jorge Montano, heard his mother's pleas, ran from the house to the pool, grabbing an 8-foot pool-cleaning pole, Chiles said. The boy extended the pole to his mother and pulled her to the side of the pool where she was able to hang on.

Jorge then ran inside the house, dialed the 911 emergency number, and told disptacher Mary O'Gwinn to send someone to his home.

Police found the woman shaken but healthy.
