The Utah Water Pollution Control Committee has approved a $3 million loan to the Solitude Improvement District to help maintain clean water supplies for Salt Lake City.

The low-interest loan will pay all but about $125,000 on the project cost to install a new sewer water collector system in Big Cottonwood Canyon, said spokesman Don Ostler.Big Cottonwood Canyon provides about one-third of Salt Lake City's drinking water, Ostler said. The project will replace "an inadequate system to maintain the high quality of this critical watershed."

The funds from the Utah Wastewater Loan Program carry a 3 percent interest charge.
