The foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia met secretly in the sultanate of Oman last month for the first high-level talks since the two nations broke ties more than a year ago, a senior diplomat said. The talks between Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati and his Saudi Arabian counterpart, Prince Saud Al Faisal, were held amid Arab efforts to encourage moderation in Iran following the June 3 death of spiritual leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Arab government sources said Sunday.

Khomeini's rise to power in 1979 led to a deterioration of ties with Saudi Arabia.
