US WEST Communications will bring 100 new jobs into Utah as part of the telecommunication company's program to consolidate and streamline its corporate accounting operations, company officials said Tuesday.

Utah has been selected as the site to consolidate US WEST's revenue accounting functions. The new jobs will be phased in over the next two years.Landing the accounting jobs is apparently considered quite a coup by the Utah operation, considering the examination of other locations in US WEST's 14-state service area that took place months before the decision was made.

"US WEST Communications believes this is a unique opportunity to significantly add to the work force in Utah. This is a major step for economic development," said W. Mack Lawrence, Utah vice president and chief executive officer for US WEST.

He explained that among the factors considered in selecting Utah was the impact on US WEST employees and the facilities of each location.

Some of the new jobs will be transfers to Salt Lake City from other cities, while others will be hired locally, a spokeswoman said.
