A Midvale man accused of killing his friend and then burying the body faces a preliminary hearing next month on a charge of second-degree murder.

John V. Holloway, 47, 545 E. Center St., appeared Tuesday before 3rd Circuit Judge Dennis Fuchs, who scheduled a hearing for July 19 before Judge Paul Grant.A criminal complaint says Holloway shot Peter Henriquez, 32, through the ear with a .22-caliber rifle on June 8.

After the slaying, Holloway went to the Midvale Police Department, confessed to the crime and told officers he had buried the body, which police later unearthed in his back yard, according to the complaint.

Henriquez and Holloway had been drinking together in Holloway's bedroom prior to the slaying.

Holloway remained in the Salt Lake County Jail Wednesday in lieu of $50,000 bail.
