Salvatore Antibo, a gritty runner from Sicily, missed the world 10,000-meter record by just 2.69 seconds at the World Games IAAF Mobil Grand Prix track and field meet. The Italian won the featured event at the Olympic Stadium in 27 minutes, 16.50 seconds after besting Addis Abebe of Ethiopia on the homestretch.

Five American athletes won their events: Larry Myricks won the men's long jump with a leap of 27 foot, 4 1/2 inches; Tonie Campbell won the 110-meter hurdles in 13.51; Jeff Reynolds won the 400 in 45.76; Sandra Farmer-Patrick won the women's 400 hurdles in 54.05; and Jan Wohlschlag took the high jump at 6-4.
