An Orem man charged with killing his girlfriend's 18-month-old daughter in April pleaded not guilty to the charge during arraignment Friday before 4th District Judge George E. Ballif.

Ballif postponed setting a trial date for the defendant, Michael Anthony Carpenter, 32, so the case can be assigned to another judge. Ballif recused himself for personal reasons.Carpenter is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Chelsea Everson, who died April 22 of head injuries. The victim's mother, Reisa Everson, had left the child with the defendant while she served a 24-hour sentence in the Utah County Jail.

Carpenter is being held on $50,000 bail.
