Helicopters dropped food parcels Monday to thousands of villagers stranded by mudslides and floods that killed at least 200 people during the weekend, officials said.

More than 100,000 people left homeless by the monsoon-triggered devastation sought shelter in schools, churches and Buddhist temples, police and relief workers reported.At least eight inches of rain fell Saturday, causing deluges of earth and water in valleys that wind through the southwest corner of the island - from Kegalle in the central hills, south to Ratnapura and down to Galle on the Indian Ocean coast.
