Utah Girls State is scheduled June 11 through 17 at Southern Utah State College.

Local, county and state officials will take part in the week-long event, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. It will attract 388 young women, all of them high school seniors next fall."Girls State is one of the foremost programs held on campus each summer, a recognized leader in its educational value," said Daphne Dalley, special projects coordinator for the school's Division of Continuing Education.

Girls Staters gain practical experience organizing party conventions and enacting legislation, Dalley said. In addition, they elect city, county and state officials while studying the administrative, legislative and judicial structures of each level of government.

General elections will be held for Girls State and Girls Nation officers.

A quartet of officials elected at SUSC last June will direct Girls State activities. Margo Fields, Logan, is the Girls State governor. Rachel Mabey, Bountiful, is the lieutenant governor. Jennifer Peterson, Manti, and Amy Worlton, Lehi, are the Girls Nation senators. Girls State is directed by Debra May. American Legion Auxiliary President Hazel Jones will call the 1989 session to order.
