Convicted murderer George Wesley Hamilton likely won't be retried until September, says the judge who presided over the original trial.
Last February, 4th District Judge George E. Ballif ordered a new trial for Hamilton after determining his rights had been violated by jury misconduct. Ballif ruled that a newspaper article about the case, which a juror brought into deliberations, tainted the verdict.Hamilton was convicted in August 1987 of murdering Sharon Sant, a 19-year-old Southern Utah State College student, whose mutilated body was found in August 1985 in a shallow grave near Cove Fort, Millard County.
Hamilton was sentenced to five years to life for the murder. He served about 18 months before Ballif ordered him released from prison and remanded to the Millard County sheriff to await a second trial.
