SHARE 22 QUALIFY FOR STATE AMATEUR

Twenty-two golfers, led by veteran Garth Ford, qualified for the State Amateur golf tournament in the Southern Regional Qualifying on Monday at Spanish Oaks Golf Course.

Ford, the 1988 UGA Senior champion, fired a 2-under-par 70 to capture medalist honors just ahead of David Boorman, who shot a 71. Ford was aided by an eagle-2 at the par-4 16th hole.Others in the 85-man field who qualified for the July 5-9 State Amateur at Riverside Country Club included John Taylor and Eddie Heinen at 72, and Randy Price, Dan McKee, Ryan Rhees, Roberto Herrera and Ron Hitchcock at 73.

Also, Cory Carter, Ron Simmons, Doug Marriott, Glen Hatch, Grant Gerrtsen, Craig Gardner and Richard Nielsen at 74 and Jack Sheen, Yoes Piccinini, Scott Brockbank, Tom Pace, Lee Eggertsen and Ron Jewkes at 75 all qualified for the state's most prestigious amateur event.

Later this week, the Central Region Qualifying will be played at Glendale Golf Course Wednesday, the North Central will be played at Bountiful Golf Course Thursday and the Dixie Qualifying will be Friday at Bloomington Country Club. On Monday the Northern Qualifying will be played at the new Brigham City Golf Course. The eventual field will include approximately 140 golfers.
