At least 74 people were drowned in Mozambique when a ferry capsized as it left the port of Inhambane on the coast, state radio reported Friday.

The radio said that 30 people survived the disaster Wednesday but that the death toll could be much higher as the ferry, built to carry 150 people, was overloaded. It was leaving Inhambane for a 20-minute journey to the town of Maxixe, across the bay.

The disaster was the second in Inhambane bay in six months. In January, 40 people drowned when a sailing boat sank.
