Inmates are lined up against a fence near a patrol car as flames light up the night sky in Banning, Calif. Rioting inmates at the Banning Road Camp Rehabilitation Center set fire to a watch tower, several buildings and vehicles in a rampage Sunday and early Monday that injured 10 people. Four buildings were destroyed. Racial tensions sparked the melee, which was quelled early Monday after a "lockdown" at the medium- and minimum-security facility, 90 miles east of Los Angeles. Officers in riot gear escorted Banning firefighters onto the grounds to battle the flames.
