A $500,000 grant is coming to Utah from the U.S. Labor Department to assist coal miners who are unemployed because of coal mine closures in central Utah.

Secretary of Labor Elizabeth Dole said the funds are authorized under Title III of the Job Training Partnership Act and will provide dislocated workers with retraining and other support services to help them re-enter the work force.The Southeastern Association of Governments will handle the money to assist up to 158 miners unemployed as a result of the mine closures by Valley Camp Coal, Sunnyside Reclamation and Salvage Inc., Castle Gate Coal and U.S. Fuel Co., said Luis Sepulveda, regional administrator for employment and training for the department.
