The first Chinese student leader to escape from Beijing after the massacre has come out of hiding to de-nounce the Chinese government and vow to fight the regime from overseas.
Shen Tong, 20, called for economic sanctions against China and for students to join in a pro-democracy movement in exile. His appearance at a news conference Friday in Newton, Mass., marked the first time he had been seen in public since he arrived in the United States two weeks ago.
"I am now going to devote myself overseas to continue the movement for democracy in China," an angry Shen said at a news conference at the Walker Ecumenical Center, where Chinese students have operated an information line since mid-May.
"I hope there will be a united organization of Chinese students in America and other countries."
As a member of a student delegation that met with Chinese government officials and an organizer of one of the largest demonstrations in Beijing earlier this year, Shen is on the government's list of most-wanted student leaders.
Chinese students in the United States say Shen is the first Beijing student leader to have left the country after the carnage in Tiananmen Square June 3-4. Theyhave been deliberately vague about how he escaped China.
Shen said he flew out of Beijing on the same plane as three Canadian Broadcasting journalists. The Canadian company said it did not assist Shen's escape.
Shen held a valid passport and student visa because he had been accepted to Brandeis University this fall.
