An Ocean County man who allegedly inserted shards of rusty razor blades into Ball Park hot dogs and then put the packages back on a supermarket shelf was charged Friday with federal product tampering offenses.
David Bowman, 22, of Lakewood, admitted to local police that he placed broken pieces of double-edged razor blades into four packages of the Ball Park frankfurters, manufactured by Hygrade Food Products Corp. in Southfield, Mich., according to Howard Wiemer, an assistant U.S. attorney in Camden.Bowman has also been charged in Lakewood with aggravated assault, maintaining a public nuisance and reckless endangerment, said Lakewood police officer Robert Thomas.
The case began July 24 when Bowman called police to his home around 2 a.m., saying he had cut his mouth after biting into a hot dog that had pieces of metal in it, Thomas said.
Bowman was taken to Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood, where he was treated for lacerations of his mouth and tongue and then released, Thomas said.
